Dogs, Cats Stolen From Shelter

**************************************************************************************************

More than a dozen dogs and cats were stolen from the Harrison county KY animal shelter. Early Sunday morning, thieves broke in through a window and took their time picking and choosing the animals they wanted to take.

Allen Fryman says they took six black cats and three others, along with six small dogs. He fears they could be using the animals for bait for dog fighting. Not only the animals, they also took sixty bags of dog food and ten bags of cat food.

Fryman believes the thieves could have spent more than an hour inside the shelter picking through the cages and hauling them into a truck parked in a back field.

A $1,000 reward has been put up for information leading to the people responsible for the shelter break-in.

See video:  http://www.wkyt.com/home/headlines/82128122.html

**On Tuesday, 1/19, a shelter in TN also experienced the same thing.  They took a 3 legged dog, a blind dog, and many others.  A white van with no back windows was seen.**

Hi, all you animal lovers!
This is pretty  simple... Please ask ten friends to each ask a further ten today!
The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting  enough people to click on it daily so they can meet their quota of  getting FREE FOOD donated every day to abused and neglected animals.  It takes less than a minute (about 15 seconds) to go to their site  and click on the purple box 'fund food for animals for free'. This  doesn't cost you a thing.
Their corporate  sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food  to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.
Here's the web site! Please pass it along to people you know.

The Shelter Pet Project is Coming!

*************************************************
POSTED 9/11

http://www.theshelterpetproject.org/index.asp

Get Ready for Lots of New Adopters!

Launching this fall, The Shelter Pet Project is a three-year, nationwide media campaign aimed at boosting pet adoptions nationwide. A collaborative effort by The Humane Society of the United States, Maddie's Fund, and the Ad Council, in partnership with the entire animal welfare community, this unprecedented campaign centers on two main messages:

  • Shelter pets are loving, well-adjusted animals who are homeless through no fault of their own.
  • When considering adding a pet to the family, ADOPT!

The upbeat, funny ads, created pro bono by Draftfcb, are designed specifically to overcome stereotypes that discourage people from adopting shelter pets. To learn more about the development and goals of this campaign, read "A Big New Voice for Shelter Animals" in the May-June issue of Animal Sheltering magazine.

The campaign rolls out in late September and is sure to drive the public to your doorstep! Are you ready? When is the last time you examined your adoption policies? Does your staff need a customer service refresher? Will volunteers be ready to help adopters select the right pet for their family?

Sign up to receive The Scoop e-newsletter for updates and tips to help you prepare, and please add our email address, info@..., to your e-mail address book, spam software whitelist, or mail system whitelist. Get behind-the-scenes news on the campaign by following The HSUS on Facebook and Twitter. For public outreach, direct your community to theshelterpetproject.org.

The Shelter Pet Project is more than an advertising campaign—it's a movement that can have a positive impact on the lives of millions of companion animals. Working together, we can make pet overpopulation a thing of the past.

National List of Class B Dealers selling pets to labs

*************************************************

Good information to have:

The link below takes you to a list of Class B Dealers, published by APHIS (animal and plant health inspection services) which is part of the USDA.  Many people who organize transports and recruit adopters/fosters online do not know that there are Class B Dealers who sell pets and pet parts to laboratories.  Rescue organizations may be sending free pets to these people, and unknowingly the pets will be used in experiments or killed for their body parts.  These dealers make a great deal of money selling pets, and pet parts.

If you know of any other Class B Dealers that should be added to this list, please forward their information to all rescues.  We need to drive these Class B Dealers out of business. Thank you.

For those of you not sure exactly what they do, watch this HBO documentary.  You will be sickened and sad beyond belief.  I had no idea about Class B dealers and dog thieves, and pets sold at flea markets, or what happened, until I watched a few years ago.

Be alert to names on list, as they can deceive as rescuers!!!!

A better doggie wheelchair

**********************************************************************************
Hi all animal lovers-

This is Cheri Hildreth, in Louisville, KY. I want to share an exciting
development that can help paraplegic dogs everywhere thanks to a wonderful
bioengineering professor and dog lover here at UofL, Dr. Gina Bertocci.
She has designed an adjustable wheelchair for paraplegic dogs that anyone
can build using items commonly found at a hardware store(except for two
harnesses that attach to the dog. She is not pursuing a patent and instead
has posted instructions on her web page for people that want to build the
wheelchair themselves at http://web.me. com/gbertocci. I think this is just
wonderful that she is being so selfless and openly sharing the design
information!
Wheelchairs for paralyzed dogs have been on the market for some time, but
their high cost keeps many pet owners from buying them. Most cost several
hundred dollars and can't be adjusted to keep up with a growing dog. Dr.
Bertocci's canine wheelchair is fully adjustable and weighs about 12 lbs.
Parts can be purchased for less than $200 and assembled in one day using
her design. If you go to the web site listed in this paragraph, you can
see a video of doberman "Maggie" who was hit by a car that fractured her
spine "in action"in her adjustable canine wheelchair designed and built
by Dr. Bertocci. She looks very happy and exploring a field at a pretty
good clip!

My assistant Wanda and I really want to get the word out about this and
plan to share with as many dog lovers, shelters and vets as we can come
up with!
Thanks in advance...

SOAR: 16 dogs Rescued in 2009!! A busy first year

*************************************************************************************
POSTED 1/2

A glance back at 2009

SOAR had a busy first year as an organization. Looking back I wondered how much of a difference SOAR made in our attempt to end lifetime chaining of dogs here in central Kentucky.

In the big scheme of things it doesn't seem like much considering how bad animals in Kentucky have it compared to other states around our nation. But, we are doing what we can to make life better for the forgotten ones left out on the end of a chain.

SOAR rescued 16 dogs in 2009!  And made numerous visits to chained dogs along the way. This number does not include the Hoarding case in Bourbon County that we helped put to an end, freeing 20 dogs from a miserable life. Most of the adult dogs in that case had heartworms and we lost our Junior from complications from that. We still have A.J., the other one we rescued from there, he's in his final week of heartworm treatment and doing great.

 A.J. needs a forever home!

AJ as we found him at the hoarders house.

Nine of the dogs we rescued had been chained or penned their whole life. The others found their way into our program by other means.
We still have five dogs that need forever homes. It is not SOAR's intent to become an adoption agency, it is our hope that, by educating, people who chain would bring their dogs inside the home and make them a family member, or at the least lets us build them a fence to get the dog off the chain. We have not had much luck in the fencing department compared to our friends at Chainfree Asheville, they built 21 fences in 2009, freeing 38 dogs.

The difference is simply demographics, people in Asheville want help and welcome a "free fence built and paid for by the volunteers."
People in Kentucky, well, their dog likes being chained 24/7, thank you very much! No kidding, that's what we hear. And they refuse to change.
That's why Kentucky needs a law concerning lifetime chaining, people will not do it on their own, they don't want to be educated, it's just a dog to them and they don't want anyone telling them how to keep it.
Asheville, on the other hand got their chaining ordinance passed in October!

SOAR worked with the Fayette Urban County Council for eight months last year trying to get a chaining ordinance passed. It failed back in June and sadly SOAR's work has increased greatly, we are fielding many calls and emails to check on chained dogs. We log each one and we do go and check on them. Winter is our busiest time of year with complaints of dogs outside with no shelter, frozen water and no food.
We give out lots of straw in the winter to give some warmth, food, treats and hugs.

Despite numerous attempts by us to get the chaining issue back into The Services Committee and meet with council, we are ignored. In 2010, we hope to be successful in getting this back on their agenda. But, we need YOUR help to do it. Please contact your councilmember and let them know you care about this issue and ask if they will "sponsor" the bill.

You can find out who your councilperson is via our website @ www.speakoutandrescue.org

We have many events and goals slated for the upcoming year,

Make it your 2010 resolution to get involved, become a volunteer with SOAR, or any other rescue. Just get out there and make a differnce.

And finally, until every chained/penned dog is inside, and in our beds:), SOAR will keep knocking on doors and doing what we can to make a day in the life of a chained dog better.

Happy New Year,
Tracy Miller

Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine & a Miracle

***************************************************
Maj. Brian Dennis and Nubs today.
Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

When Maj. Brian Dennis of the United States Marine Corps met a wild stray dog with shorn ears while serving in Iraq, he had no idea of the bond they would form, leading to seismic changes in both their lives. "The general theme of the story of Nubs is that if you're kind to someone, they'll never forget you -- whether it be person or animal," Dennis tells Paw Nation.

In October 2007, Dennis and his team of 11 men were in Iraq patrolling the Syrian border. One day, as his team arrived at a border fort, they encountered a pack of stray dogs -- not uncommon in the barren, rocky desert that was home to wolves and wild dogs.

"We all got out of the Humvee and I started working when this dog came running up," recalls Dennis. "I said, 'Hey buddy' and bent down to pet him." Dennis noticed the dog's ears had been cut. "I said, 'You got little nubs for ears.'" The name stuck. The dog whose ears had been shorn off as a puppy by an Iraqi soldier (to make the dog "look tougher," Dennis says) became known as Nubs.

Dennis fed Nubs scraps from his field rations, including bits of ham and frosted strawberry Pop Tarts. "I didn't think he'd eat the Pop Tart, but he did," says Dennis.

At night, Nubs accompanied the men on night patrols. "I'd get up in the middle of the night to walk the perimeter with my weapon and Nubs would get up and walk next to me like he was doing guard duty," says Dennis.

The next day, Dennis said goodbye to Nubs, but he didn't forget about the dog. He began mentioning Nubs in emails he wrote to friends and family back home. "I found a dog in the desert," Dennis wrote in an email in October 2007. "I call him Nubs. We clicked right away. He flips on his back and makes me rub his stomach."

"Every couple of weeks, we'd go back to the border fort and I'd see Nubs every time," says Dennis. "Each time, he followed us around a little more." And every time the men rumbled away in their Humvees, Nubs would run after them. "We're going forty miles an hour and he'd be right next to the Humvee," says Dennis. "He's a crazy fast dog. Eventually, he'd wear out, fall behind and disappear in the dust."

On one trip to the border fort in December 2007, Dennis found Nubs was badly wounded in his left side where he'd been stabbed with a screwdriver. "The wound was infected and full of pus," Dennis recalls. "We pulled out our battle kits and poured antiseptic on his wound and force fed him some antibiotics wrapped in peanut butter." That night, Nubs was in so much pain that he refused food and water and slept standing up because he couldn't lay down. The next morning, Nubs seemed better. Dennis and his team left again, but he thought about Nubs the entire time, hoping the dog was still alive.

Excerpt, "Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine & a Miracle,"
Little, Brown for Young Readers
Two weeks later, when Dennis and his team returned, he found Nubs alive and well. "I had patched him up and that seemed to be a turning point in how he viewed me," says Dennis. This time, when Dennis and his team left the fort, Nubs followed. Though the dog lost sight of the Humvees, he never gave up. For two days, Nubs endured freezing temperatures and packs of wild dogs and wolves, eventually finding his way to Dennis at a camp an incredible 70 miles south near the Jordanian border.

"There he was, all beaten and chewed up," says Dennis. "I knew immediately that Nubs had crossed through several dog territories and fought and ran, and fought and ran," says Dennis. The dog jumped on Dennis, licking his face.

Most of the 80 men at the camp welcomed Nubs, even building him a doghouse. But a couple of soldiers complained, leading Dennis' superiors to order him to get rid of the dog. With his hand forced, Dennis decided that the only thing to do was bring Nubs to America. He began coordinating Nubs' rescue effort. Friends and family in the States helped, raising the $5,000 it would cost to transport Nubs overseas.

Finally, it was all arranged. Nubs was handed over to volunteers in Jordan, who looked after the dog and sent him onto to Chicago, then San Diego, where Dennis' friends waited to pick him up. Nubs lived with Dennis' friends and began getting trained by local dog trainer Graham Bloem of the Snug Pet Resort. "I focused on basic obedience and socializing him with dogs, people and the environment," says Bloem.

A month later, Dennis finished his deployment in Iraq and returned home to San Diego, where he immediately boarded a bus to Camp Pendleton to be reunited with Nubs. "I was worried he wouldn't remember me," says Dennis. But he needn't have worried. "Nubs went crazy," recalls Dennis. "He was jumping up on me, licking my head."

Dennis' experience with Nubs led to a children's picture book, called ";Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine & a Miracle," published by Little, Brown for Young Readers. They have appeared on the Today Show and will be appearing on The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien on Monday.

Was it destiny that Dennis met Nubs and brought him to America? "I don't know about that," says Dennis. "It's been a strange phenomenon. It's been a blessing. I get drawings mailed to me that children have drawn of Nubs with his ears cut off. It makes me laugh."

Snowball's Transport

*****************************************************

We pulled a boy from a KY shelter this week with the help of Small Dog Rescue.  His name is Snowball.  He had been surrendered by the owner after the wife ended up ill and the husband could not care for her and the dogs.

He is safe in MD.  Here are some pictures during his transport yesterday.

Snowball was very frightened in the shelter and is blind.  He is only about 4 years old and a real gentlemen.  The transporters were wonderful and to help get him to Heidi in MD where she will have his eyes checked and foster him until his furever home can be found.

A Rescuer's Prayer

**********************************************************************************

Now I lay me down to rest
I pray my soul can stand this test
Of watching critters lose their homes
While owners gripe and cry and moan

I long for strength of spirit and
I pray they'll find a home again
Where they will know a loving heart
I can't do much, but it's a start..

And spare me from the owner's pleas
About the baby's allergies
Or how they're moving out of state
Or spitefulness 'tween cat and mate'

Please keep me sane while dealing with
The woman who bought as a gift
A wriggling tiny ball of fluff
That now is playing way too rough

Remind me I should bite my lip
When confronted with "he grew too quick."
"I didn't know he'd get so large."
"He seems to think that he's in charge."

Protect my heart when I hear them say
"I think we'll breed our dog one day."
Sometimes I think it'll break in two;
Each day brings trials harsh and new

And if I die before I wake
I pray one hopeless soul you'll take
My tears are gone, my faith is bare
Lord, please hear my rescue prayer.

8. ODDS & ENDS

*******************************************************

A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS.........

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.

2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.

3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.

4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.

5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.

6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.

7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.

8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.

9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.

10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

~Take a moment today to thank God for your pets. Enjoy and take good care of them.

Life would be a much duller, less joyful experience without God's critters.

~Now please pass this on to other pet owners. We do not have to wait for Heaven, to be surrounded by hope, love, and joyfulness. It is here on earth and has four legs!
